THE TOP 10 DUMBEST CELEBRITY TATTOOS

To ink or not to ink… that is the question these celebrities should've asked before making such permanent and questionable decisions.

10. Stephen Baldwin

Stephen Baldwin will seemingly do anything to nab an acting job and grab a moment in the spotlight. The lesser known Baldwin reportedly made a friendly bet with Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus. The duo became friends in 2007 after meeting at the White House (I want to know how that went down!) and Cyrus reportedly dared Baldwin to get Hannah Montana’s initials inked on his body. If he got inked, Cyrus would give Baldwin a guest spot on the Disney TV show. Fast-forward a year later, Baldwin showed off his HM tatt and Cyrus begrudgingly agreed to let him appear on her show.

9. Andy Milonakis

Andy Milonakis deserves credit for the marvelous irony that is his table tattoo. The youthful-looking comedian says that the intention of his tattoo is to make fun of the elitists who get “deep, meaningful” tattoos. While Milonakis gets points for making fun of douchebags, the tattoo is still dumb…and permanent. He could have easily made the exact same statement with a temporary tattoo. Is his table tatt still going to be ironic in 50 years when he’s a senior citizen and it’s all droopy and saggy? Then again, this might not be an issue as this guy might not be able to age.

8. Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus has recently vamped up her image in an effort to cross over from the tweener to a more mainstream audience. This has meant dressing proactively, sexing up her dance moves, and getting inked. The 17-year-old recently had the word “love” tattooed on the inside of her right ear. Now the meaning of the tatt is not known, nor is it known why she had it inked on the inside of her ear (could it have something to do with listening to love??). What is known is that it’s illegal for anyone under 18 to get inked in the U.S. without the prior consent of their parents. So let’s blame her parents. They should know better!

7. Megan Fox

The so-called sexiest woman in the world would be so much hotter is she weren’t covered in stupid, self-indulgent tattoos. The worst being her tattoo of movie icon Marilyn Monroe. The tatt on her inner right forearm is well crafted. The problem with it is it immediately reminds everyone that Megan Fox is not as talented or as beautiful as Monroe.

Fox also has her boyfriend Brian Austin Green’s first name inked on her pelvis and a nonsensical quote from Shakespeare’s King Lear on her back. It seems it doesn’t take much to inspire Ms. Fox to get a new tattoo. The sexpot recently got inked in honor of Mickey Rourke, with whom she recently worked with on a film. The Rourke-ster inspired her to have the phrase "Those who danced were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music" across her rib cage. I’ll leave it you to work out how this is connected to Rourke.

6. Hayden Panettiere

Hayden’s back tattoo is a lesson to celebrities getting inked in a language foreign to their own. The Heroes hottie thought she was being fancy and cultural when she had a tattoo written in Italian. The phrase was meant to say “Vivere senza rimpianti” which translates "to live without regrets.” Well, Ms. Panettiere is probably living with some regrets now as the tattoo contains a typo. The tattoo artist, obviously suffering from a momentary case of dyslexia, added an extra “i” to “rimpianti” resulting in it being spelled “rimipianti."

5. Eve

Eve’s favorite tattoo is a set of dog paw prints that appear on her chest. The rapper and all around badass says she got the tatts on a dare. Why is it that people do such stupid things on a dare? Anyway, Eve has come to appreciate and even love her paw prints. She thinks they “look good” and has actually found a personal meaning in them. She tells MTV News, “It's just funny, 'cause I got with the Ruff Ryders and they call themselves dogs and I call myself the bitch of the litter. And it just stuck, like the paws were supposed to be there.” Yep, they were just supposed to be there.

4. Steve-O

Jackass star Steve-O has a body covered in stupid tattoos. Among his collection of dim-witted tattoos is a flying penis, which Steve-O describes as “the dumbest tattoo ever.” He also has the words “s**t” and “f**k” inked on his knuckles, a tattoo on his buttocks which says “Your name” and another tatt which says “I Have A Small Weiner.”

Steve-O’s dumbest (or greatest, depending on how you view things) would have to be the life-size portrait of himself on his back. Now you can look Steve-O in the face when he has his back to you! The tattoo is actually pretty incredible and life-like. Underneath it he has the words “yeah dude, I rock!” Interestingly, his back face is actually bigger than his real face.  Steve-O thinks it has a great chance of making it into the Guinness Book of Records for the “largest self-portrait tattoo,” if he ever gets around to notifying them.

3. Dean McDermott

Dean McDermott must really love his wife Tori Spelling. The sometime actor and reality television star has not one, but two portraits of his wife inked on his body. Dean says the tattoos are a sign of his deep and undying love to the woman of his dreams and mother of two of his children. While rumors of trouble in the relationship have bounced around since the two got together, nothing says forever like getting your wife’s face tattooed on your body multiple times. Getting inked like this is more of a sign of commitment than any ring or piece of paper.

2. Jon Gosselin

Just when you thought this excuse of a man couldn’t do anything dumber, he goes and gets a huge back tattoo of a dragon. Yes, a dragon. I thought Gosselin’s diamond stud was a major sign of douchebaggery and a clear signal of a man suffering from a sense of male inadequacy. This ridiculously large dragon takes the cake. What makes it worse is that it has a greater meaning for Gosselin. He tells RadarOnline, "I have planned this tattoo for years now. I wanted something that resembled a rebirth or a change in me.” Get a job, support your kids, and please go away!

1. Coolio

Gangster rapper Coolio decided to put the cool back into his name by getting a tattoo in honor of the musical group Insane Clown Posse, whose fans are known as Juggalos and Juggalettes.   Coolio decided to beef up his street cred by getting inked with the word "Juggalo." The problem is that the person who inked him didn’t now how to spell it. They misspelled the word, leaving out a "g" and leaving Coolio with a tattoo that reads “Jugalo Cool.”

Coolio told TMZ that the misspelling was intentional and that he does not plan on correcting the “mistake.” But seriously, what else would he say, right?

How Should I Talk to a Tattoo Artist About a Project?

The desire for a custom tattoo is quite commendable, as it will ensure that you have a personalized work which really means something to you. However, there are a few things to consider when you are thinking about a tattoo project, to ensure that you end up with a design that you are truly, totally happy with. The first thing you should do is find a good tattoo artist, making sure that he or she is a good fit for the style of design you want, and then you will need to talk to the artist about your design.
A common complaint of tattoo artists is that people come in with ideas which are either too nebulous or far too precise. When you meet with an artist to discuss a design, you should bring along some visual aids so that you can talk about the style you want the piece to be done in, and what you want to be depicted, whether it's a family coat of arms or a mythical beast. If you want a tattoo of existing artwork, such as a drawing by Picasso, be prepared to make some changes to the work, as human skin is a very unique canvas. You may also want to bring in specific examples of what you do not want, to provide a frame of reference for the artist. Have an idea about the size and placement when you talk to a tattoo artist, as well.

All About Temporary Tattoos

Temporary Tattoos
Temporary tattoos are, as the name suggests, non-permanent. They are usually an image that resembles a real tattoo, and may be applied to the skin as a hand drawn image, painted, airbrushed, or transferred, with transfers being the more common and popular method. This kind of temporary body art has a number of purposes, and is popular in professions such as acting, where a character has a tattoo but, obviously, the actor would not be willing to get a real (permanent) tattoo for the role.

Temporary Transferable Tattoos

Possibly the most memorable use of transferable tattoos in mainstream culture is that of those used as inserts in bubble gum. These “transfers”were simple ink transfers that could be applied to the skin, and would easily wash or rub off. The quality of the print was not of a high standard, however, resulting in blurry images. This kind of tattoo became very popular in North America for many years.
The modern incarnation of these kinds of tattoos are made of ink and glue, and have a considerably longer life span. With these tattoos, the image is applied to the skin, and will remain until removed, or the image fades, which can take up to five days.
Despite this kind of temporary tattoo being mainly used in advertising, or as a novelty item, the process involved in creating said transfers has found a home in lithography. More recently, the fashion house, Chanel, has been offering expertly applied temporary tattoos of Chanel’s design. This offer, specifically in a themed area in Selfridges on Oxford Street, claims the transfers can be applied to “areas of a private nature”
The makeup of a temporary tattoo often consists of five main elements;
  •     The front sheet of paper
  •     The back sheet of paper
  •     Ink
  •     Glue
  •     Protective plastic sheet
A special coating is applied to the front sheet, with the image used in the tattoo being printed onto it using special inks. The glue is then applied over the top, and the plastic sheet is placed over the top of that to protect the tattoo and the glue. Usually, the back sheet is left untreated, and will often have information printed on it, such as disclaimers, warnings, and ingredients.
To apply these tattoos, you would usually remove the plastic sheet from the image, placing the image face down against the area of skin where the tattoo is to be transferred. You would then moisten the back of the transfer thoroughly, and finally, you would peel away the backing, leaving the image in place on the skin.
In the early eighties, temporary tattoos used different, more exotic inks, instead of the standard used today. 3M introduced a new “Micro-Fragrance”coating that released a scene when agitated. This led to scratch-n-sniff technology, and a number of companies started putting out scented tattoos
It was around this same time that the process of printing began to improve dramatically, as well as improvements to the ink used, allowing the transfers to look considerably more realistic, and last longer. This increase in quality directly resulted in an increase in demand. Transferrable tattoos started to be seen as something that would last, and could be marketed individually, rather than as part of something inexpensive.
These days, transferrable tattoos for sale are common, from shop counters to vending machines, from mass retailers to boutiques, and can even be customized and printed on demand using a colour laser printer and special paper. The range of design options is immense, from Marvel super heroes to designs by famous artist, Ed Hardy.

Henna Tattoos

Mehndi on a hand.

Mehndi, more commonly known as Henna tattoos, are a form of temporary tattoos that has been born of South Asian tradition. Using a paste made from the leaves of Lawsonia inhermis – or the Henna plant. The leaves are powdered to make the paste. The active dye in henna is called Lawsone, and binds with keratin found in skin, hair and fingernails. Traditionally, henna is used to depict intricate, delicate patterns, usually on the hand or feet. However, in more recent times, henna has been used to paint designs of all kinds in different parts of the body.
Henna is limited in colour, and can only be used to create various shades of red through brown, and near-blacks, whereas other methods tend to have more colour options. Once henna paste is applied to the skin, it is left for several hours, staining. Henna paste will fade gradually with the shedding skin, and can last for days, even up to a month, depending on the quality of the application, and how well it is looked after.
People wanting to apply a henna tattoo themselves should be careful when buying the paste. It is possible to buy “black henna”which is supposed to be fast-staining. These usually contain PPD, or para-phenylenediamine, and can cause allergic reactions, or even scarring.

Temporary Airbrush

Similarly to other forms of temporary tattoo, airbrush tattoos are applied to the surface of the skin, rather than damaging it in order place the tattoo ink underneath the skin. With airbrush, a stencil is typically fixed to or held against the skin, and the tattoo medium (ink, tribal paint, etc) is sprayed with an airbrush. Unlike transferrable tattoos, delicate elements of the tattoo can be controlled by the person applying the tattoo during the application, more like permanent tattoos.
Airbrush tattoos have been around since the late nineties, and are often used in the advertising and entertainment industries. Constant research and development in the area of airbrush inks and equipments has led to airbrush tattoos more closely resembling the real thing, to the degree that many people cannot distinguish them

Airbrush Tattoo Removal

Airbrush tattoo ink and paints are often alcohol-based, and the regular application of baby powder through the day can greatly increase the life of the tattoo. Removal, on the other hand, requires the application of an oil or alcohol-based product. Suntan lotion works well for this, as well as rubbing alcohol, though it should be used carefully, as it will dry the skin, and can irritate. Left alone, an airbrush tattoo will last anywhere from a few days to a week, depending on how often the area is washed, and how well it is taken care of.

Ballpoint Pen Tattoos

Temporary tattoo drawn in ballpoint pen

Perhaps less popular, ballpoint pens are another means of creating artwork on the skin for decorative, recreational, and even commercial purposes. Though not as well-known as the other temporary tattoo methods, ballpoint pen artists have been known to make appearances at special events in order to draw on guests, and have also been hired to create temporary tattoos for film. In this kind of temporary tattoo, the ink is applied to the surface of the skin in much the same fashion that it is with a real tattoo gun, with some professional tattoo artists being known to create artwork on surfaces other than skin using a ballpoint pen, often to display in their tattoo studios.
Ballpoint tattoos are the quickest of the aforementioned temporary tattoos in terms of fading, and can be washed off at any time. The ink formulas used in ballpoint pens are believed to be non-toxic – due to the writing implement’s wide use among children and students – but there is debate around this topic.

Temporary Variants of Permanent Tattoos

It is possible for tattoos applied with a permanent tattoo gun to be easier to remove. However, removal of these tattoos does not involve the removal or degradation of all the materials involved, and, thus, cannot be considered to be completely temporary.

Photo Tattoo Simulation

Services like this do not apply any kind of imagery to the skin, but, rather, can simulate the look of a tattoo on a photograph. The purpose of this is to allow someone who is considering getting a tattoo to see how it would look before actually getting inked.

Semi-Permanent Tattoos

Some tattooists may offer what are known as semi-permanent tattoos, so-called because they are applied using a tattoo gun, and will last for years, rather than days, like other temporary tattoos. There are differing methods to achieve this, with some tattooists claiming to use natural inks that disperse over time, and others claiming that the ink is inserted closer to the surface of the skin, allowing it to eventually fade as the skin sheds over prolonged periods of time.
There is a certain amount of debate over this type of tattoo, however, with some quarters claiming that they are not really temporary, and that not all semi-permanent tattoos have in fact been semi-permanent. It would be wise to assume that any tattoo method that involves inserting pigment under the skin is permanent.

Super Hot Word and Literary Tattoo Design Locations

 5

One of the biggest trends in tattoo designs is going to be word, literary and written tattoos of popular and cool quotes or sayings. There are many different names for these styles of tattoos but essential they all feature one major growing trend in tattoo designs and that is the trend of the written word.

Word Tattoo History
Of course word tattoos have always been around. A tattoo that features some lettering artwork is often less expensive and pretty easily done and therefore it has always been a pretty popular option. However, words were typically used as an embellishment to the main course so to speak. In other words (pun intended) the graphic artwork of the tattoo design always took the center stage in the past. The only real exception to this rule was a memorial or gang related design. Other than those two usually the words were simply to convey the meaning of the picture or the design of the tattoo and the words were never really thought of as the design itself.

As in everything in the world design trends change all the time. So it is with word and literary tattoo designs they have gone through a massive change. No longer are words just seen at the bottom of a large graphical tattoo design but now they are the main feature. These tattoos often feature very large sections of writing and large fonts with huge cursive lines and beautiful embellishments. These are incredible beautiful font tattoos that often feature a famous quote, a famous poem or a song lyric.

Popular Locations For Women
This trend has been picked up by men and women alike. Just as many women are getting their tattoo quotes as men. Some of the more popular locations for women to get such designs are a bit different than men.

Ankle Tattoo Designs – Since the ankle is relatively small it does not provide a bunch of space for a large format tattoo. Thus it often becomes on of the top chosen places for a small written word. These are often cute delicate tattoos with lots of embellished fonts that can wrap around the ankle.

Wrist Tattoo Designs – Wrist tattoos are a lot like ankle tattoos in terms of features and benefits of the location. Just like ankle tattoos the wrist is small, often a great place for a single word that curves around the wrist. Also hands and wrist are a feature that often get noticed so a well planned and well placed wrist tattoo will get a lot of attention.

Hip Tattoos – Hip tattoos are well (excuse the pun) but hip. Anything but on the hip is popular and sexy. This most definitely includes a fancy written tattoo design. If you choose a larger quote or poem and can find the right font to convey the meaning of the poem or saying then you have one great hip tattoo design.

Rib Cage Tattoos – Of course rib cage tattoos can be in a variety of locations but the side of the rib cage is one of the hottest locations right now in design trends. Traditionally people were a bit reluctant to get this area tattoo as it can be a bit painful since the skin and bone are close together. However, more and more people are getting rib cage tattoo design these days and many of them feature a quote, saying or word tattoo.

Popular Locations For Men

Shoulder Tattoos – The shoulder has been a popular location for getting a tattoo design for men for a long time. It is not very painful as there is a lot of tissue between the skin and the muscle and it is rather small. This makes a great location for a small saying or quote tattoo design.

Upper Back Tattoo Designs – The upper back is another great choice and location for a large word tattoo design. Since the back is large it provides a big canvas for the tattoo artist to work on. The larger the size the more detail they can add into the tattoo design.

Side Tattoo – The rib cage and side is a very popular area these days to get a tattoo design inked. It offers a pretty large area to work on so the design can be a lore more intricate and full of detail. Some of the most popular choices for this area for guys are quotes, song lyrics and of course ambigram tattoo designs.

Forearm Tattoo – If you have been consider a location that is different, unique and ultra cool you might want to consider getting your literary tattoo design done on your forearm. This size and shape of most forearms are basically rectangular which lends itself to large word designs that are big and bold.

These are just some of the more popular locations that you can get a saying or word tattoo done on your body. It is not an entire list of locations but it shows some of the most popular options. If you are still considering getting a word, saying or quote tattoo make sure you spend the time and research carefully. You want to find the right quote and equally as important you want to find the right font to ink the design.

Why Do We Really Get Tattoos?

It is the first morning of our vacation. I wake up bright and early and trot down to the ocean where I make a shocking and bone-chilling discovery: I am the only personage on the beach whose epidermis is unadorned with tattoos. Everyone is inked up except moi. According to the FDA, more than 45 million Americans are now tatted up. This past weekend, they all hit the Florida beaches and pointed jeering tattooed fingers at yours truly. To these folks I am a combo of loser and nemesis, a rebellious nonparticipant in their sick and twisted cult.

I see myself rather differently. From my untattooed point of view, I am the last heroic holdout. I’m like Charlton Heston in The Omega Man, that movie where he plays the one remaining normal person on Earth, and everyone else has gone all ghoulish and ghastly.

The trend for tattoos is not exactly breaking news. But in the last few months, it seems to me that tats have gone from fad to raging unstoppable pandemic. David Beckham, for example, used to have a bit here and a bit there, but now the majority of his upper body is inked. Those of us who follow the annual March Madness NCAA basketball tournament—my husband is a devotee—will have noted this year’s staggering proliferation of tats.

But the new extreme inking is by no means confined to the sporting set. Everywhere I look in Florida, I clock old geezers with hammocks and the word “Margaritaville” emblazoned across their burly sun-blasted torsos. Chicks, too: Today I saw a superannuated South Beach swinger boasting a tarantula on her right shoulder. Every time she hoisted her sippy cup to her lips the spider jiggled. And it’s no longer just a class thingy: I even saw tats at the legendarily WASP-y Bath and Tennis Club in Palm Beach. OK, so they were on the leg of the car-park valet, but just you wait. Next year, the old broads in the canasta salon will be sporting radical ink. Mark my words.

In the past there was one reason, and one reason only, to ink up: A tattoo confirmed your status as a scary outsider rebel carny outlaw sociopath. “Don’t mess with me because I am insane,” was the intended message. And it worked. Remember Robert Mitchum in Night of The Hunter? When he cuts Shelley Winters’ throat we are hardly surprised: We knew trouble was on the horizon as soon as we saw the words LOVE and HATE inked across his knuckles. Tattoos meant mayhem.

Cut to today: Having a tattoo has lost its original meaning. Having a tattoo now has no meaning. Having a tattoo means that you have a tattoo.

While there is no longer any compelling reason to get a tattoo, there are several reasons not to:

Tempus fugit. Sitting around for hours while some dude enlivens your back with lotus blossoms, ghouls, and moonbeams is a colossal waste of time. You could be learning to tap dance or play the accordion.

Money fugit, too. Most tat artists charge about $150 per hour. A full sleeve can take 40 hours. Bingo! $6,000, plus another $6,000 for laser removal when you hit late middle age and it’s gone all crepey and is no longer recognizable as a dragon but looks more like a squashed squirrel. You went from being the girl with the dragon tattoo to the old hag with the squashed-squirrel tattoo, and it only cost you $12K and hours of agony.

Wilkommen, bienvenue Hep C. There seems to be no limit to the horrid medical conditions which are associated with tats. Aside from all the usual blood-born suspects, new research suggests that certain inks do horrid things to your lymph nodes.

Tips for Word and Phrase Tattoos

 index8

The popularity of word and phrase tattoos continues to rise. Unlike large portrait or common design ideas, simple script tattoos can be placed in visible areas for daily reminders of sentiment, inspiration and strength. While there are no hard and fast rules to these simple forms of body inscriptions, the following tips for word and phrase tattoos with ensure you're inking a statement worthy of repeating, over and over again.

1. Spelling
Before tattooing any tattoo or word phrase, make sure the spelling is correct. Capitalize any words that need to be capitalized and ensure the words are otherwise perfect. There will be no changes later so think twice and ink once. This is especially important as well for other language tattoos. If you are tattooing something in a foreign language or a symbol, make sure it is accurate and depicted properly. Cross-check your resources first.

2. Placement
Because the body shifts and changes shape with weight changes and aging, it's important to place your word or phrase tattoo somewhere safe that is less likely to experience variations in weight fluctuations or the effects of gravity. The inner wrists and ankles are safe bets for word tattoos and also allow your to read them on a daily basis, which is sort of the point.

3. Size Matters
Aim to make your tattoo visible and readable from at least ten inches away. You want the letters to be large enough so that as your skin changes, sags or shifts, your tattoo is still visible, easy to read, and still resembling a word rather than a blob of ink. If you need to go larger in scale then be prepared to either shorten your phrase or change the placement. Nothing is worse than a tattoo that can't be understood so make your words count and make them large enough.

4. Have Meaning
Verse, phrase and quote tattoos should bear some significance and meaning in your life. Consider quotes from your favorite books or movies, perhaps a part of a poem or anything else that will serve a greater meaning than just a popular phrase that you may grow tired of later. Don't pick anything trendy or speak in slang. Try to make your quote or phrase tattoo as personal as possible. If you need to wait till that phrase comes to you, then by all means wait. Bear in mind you may not be looking for a phrase at all, but perhaps maybe a simple word tattoos such as believe, hope or love.

5. Find an Artist
Lettering tattoos are very different from portrait and picture design pieces. It helps to take your time to find an artist that really specializes in the form of art. Skill level is important with all tattoos, but lettering and font tattoos beg for attention to detail. References and local recommendations in your area will provide the first step in finding a talented tattoo artist that can make your words eternal.
